Eide signals Norwegian support for Rutte as new NATO chief

Norwegian news in english: Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte would be a strong and good replacement for Jens Stoltenberg as the new Secretary General of NATO, according to Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

«We believe that Mark Rutte is a strong and good candidate. Our final decision will be communicated internally within the NATO alliance,» said Eide (Labour Party) to TV 2. He expressed positive views about Rutte also last autumn.

Jens Stoltenberg steps down this autumn after ten years as NATO chief.

The United States, United Kingdom, and Germany support Rutte’s candidacy. He needs support from all 31 NATO member countries to get the job.

Rutte has been Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 2010. He now heads a caretaker government ministry after his government announced its resignation last July without any new government being formed so far.
